Born from a Line of Thought
The story of the BOLD Chair design began in 2004, inspired by the pure and functional beauty of Bauhaus-inspired furniture.
Designers Stéphane Arriubergé and Massimiliano Iorio wondered: Can a chair be made entirely from a single, continuous line?
This question led to an exploration of metal tubes — a classic Bauhaus element. But what emerged was far more poetic: a chair that transformed a simple line into a soft, sculptural form.
Where Function Meets Softness
During a visit to Drisag, a Belgian upholstery company, the designers experimented with wrapping polyurethane foam directly around the metal tube frame. This innovation softened the rigid structure, creating an inviting form that was both tactile and visually striking.
To complete the design, they sourced a unique textile from a sock factory, knitting an extra-long tubular cover that seamlessly hugged every curve of the chair. The result was astonishing — a chair that feels as comfortable as it looks, embodying contemporary furniture design in Malaysia that stands out for its originality.
Why “BOLD”?
The name says it all. In typography, “bold” means making a line thicker to highlight its presence. Here, the designers applied the same idea to form — thickening a steel line with foam and fabric to create an expressive, designer chair that feels both modern and playful.
From Concept to Icon
In 2009, Arriubergé and Iorio founded Moustache, a French design label known for its avant-garde approach to furniture. The BOLD Chair became the company’s first creation, soon followed by the BOLD Bench — a natural extension of the same concept, designed for shared spaces.
